Born on the 4th of July…

We have had a long weekend to celebrate our nation’s independence.

Our hometown is all dressed up in Red, White & Blue.  When you add BBQ and fireworks, it makes a small town show up and do what we do best-love each other.

We bring the babies, chairs and blankets and talk and hug people we haven’t seen in years.

All while we are serenaded by our local talent.

We honored our Veterans this year and one of my very favorites celebrated his birthday.

If you aren’t from West Blocton, Alabama-let me introduce you to one of our finest-

Jerry Claude Deerman

He and his wife Mrs. Jo lived at the very beginning of Main Street.

His love of racing was always a part of his story, so their local store “The Pit Stop” became the local hangout.

They raised 3 boys and half of the town.

I myself have been there all hours of the night until my Daddy pulled up and made me go home with him.  At the time I was embarrassed, but now I see how blessed I was that someone cared where I was.

Everyone isn’t that fortunate and Jerry Claude and Mrs. Jo knew that.  After working all day, I don’t know how they had the energy to walk home across the street.

They would lock the store up and instead of running a bunch of teenagers off of their property, they simply told us good night.

Jerry Claude had a way of letting you know that he didn’t want any nonsense.

And we didn’t want any either.

It was no secret that he served 2 tours of duty in Vietnam.

He served his country and came home to serve our community.

I imagine with what he has seen, a group of kids was nothing to stress.

They dished out food, fountain drinks and at times I know they gave away half of the store.  The best part, though, was when you got a little advice from them.

They celebrated our lives right alongside us.  You wanted their nod of approval.

Even today, if they tell you that you have done good-it just makes you stand a little taller.

I hope you have had a wonderful birthday and it is so wonderful to see you healthy and enjoying your great grandchildren.

This town owes you right along with our country.

I know I speak for those teenagers you raised, when I say thank you, thank you, thank you.

We love you and nobody represents the 4th of July better.  The Good Lord knew what he was doing when he gave you that birthday.

God Bless you, God Bless Mrs. Jo and God Bless America.

Happy 4th of July and Happy Birthday!
